Stormy Weather

Just a quick message to my followers and to the Rudolph Days Challenge entries. I know I have been mostly silent with comments for the last couple of days. We have had a terrible storm here. It uprooted trees all over...at least 30 within a two block radius of me! Trees were down onto the telephone lines and broken lines everywhere. We had no power, phone, or internet for over two days, and intermittent power before that.

We lost everything in our freezer and in our fridge so had a bit of a job to clean all that out and dispose of it all...Ugggh! Luckily, it was garbage day today. We are early am pick up and good thing for that as there was talk that they may not make it round to all address today. So many people had bucked up their fallen trees and many good samaritans were seen lifting downed trees off highways and roads and dragging them off to the curbs. We are talking 15 - 20 foot trees and in some cases maybe 6 or 8 down at a time.

Just posting this now as there is another storm brewing and there is an advisory that the power may go out again. The power outage update lines at BC Hydro were so inundated with callers that the system crashed so it was very difficult to obtain info as to when our address would be reconnected.

Hopefully I will have power to post the Rudolph Days Winner on Sept 1st. Bear with me and I will post it as soon as I can!  I promise to get round to visit everyone as soon as possible. Thank goodness for my guest designer this month!

6. Please link back to or at least mention, the Rudolph Days Challenge.
7.  Prizes will be shipped anywhere in the world.
8. The winner will be selected by random draw and announced on the first day of the following month.

My guest designer this month is our July Rudolph Days Winner, Helen of  Helen's Craft Haven.

I feel honoured that Helen chose to use the Merry Christmas Memory Box die that she won here. It looks so pretty cut from the white card...looks just like a snowbank. Her winter scene is made to look even more realistic with that pretty tree die. Hope you will pop over and visit Helen, as she has so many lovely cards on her blog!

My card this month is quite simple. I also used the Memory Box Grand Merry Christmas Script die. I used some snippets of Bazzil Ballet hot pink card. There is a faint pattern of teensy hearts on this card...it is very hard to see but you will have to trust me!

I tried a variety of DP and card behind this die and the only one I liked was this black card. Hope it does not look too stark. I added a large white poinsettia and a few Martha Stewart leafy punch shapes in green and metallic silver. It still seemed too stark so I placed some pink rhinestones here and there to look like twinkling stars, or maybe pink snowflakes! Took a couple of extra pink rhinestones and tucked them around the existing pearls in the flower center.

I am looking forward to seeing your entries and wish you all good luck in the draw. This months prize is this Memory Box Holly Leaves Die.

Garage Sale Craziness

My girlfriend and I love to garage sale. We try to go a few times each summer and always have a blast.

A couple of years ago, I bought this embroidered fabric floral spray. I believe it is from the 1990's or so when older ladies affixed these types of embroideries to sweatshirts!  This embroidery was new in package and was only a quarter! The outlined stitches are a lovely silver metallic thread and the flowers are given some depth with what looks like stickles!

Here is a closeup of the metallic sparkle...

I finally made this up into a card, but wish I had thought to use some silver mirri card.  I chose not to at the time, as I was trying to keep this card from looking to dated and gaudy. A mistake, methinks. I even debated pulling up the first aqua layer of the card and rematting it with a thin mirri border, but I could not get it to budge...Sook Wang tape holds really tight!

DP are from my snippets files and sentiment is a rubon.

Penny Black Birthday Wishes

This card is a joint effort between ittle Miss C and myself. She coloured a bunch of these PB images about a year ago and has not had time to make them up into cards. Her love of horses and riding has taken over our old card making hours!

I decided to make up one or two of them for her, using mostly pieces from my VOS stash.
I chose another of the garage sale embossed mats and  combined it a vivid hot pink scalloped diecut. I have had several of these diecuts stashed away and never managed to use them...the colour has always clashed as it is a bit overly vivid. The image was cut with a Lawn Fawn stitched die and set on the hot pink scalloped die...It looked awful! I rummaged about and found some doilies, so used a smaller lighter pink one to tone down the vivid tones and layered those both onto a larger white doily. Whew...problem solved. Those doilies are very VOS. They were bought for a scrapbook wedding layout I made over 10 years ago!

I layered up some flowers from my stash and made sure the center one was a brighter pink. I used a turquoise brad to hold it together and added another one to the flower on the cupcake. I am a sucker for teensy brads. I know they are not as popular as they once were, but I have tons in my stash so I'm trying to find ways to use them again.

I had a bit of trouble finding a background DP from my bits box so gave up and chose this paper from one of my 6 x 6 paper pads. A wee butterfly from the dollar store finished off my card. I did not add a sentiment as the EF says Happy Birthday over and over!

I am adding this card to the following challenges:

Thinking Of You

I have been combing through my coloured images and found this Thinking Of  You  image. I matted it with a snippet of gold and placed that on a scalloped square diecut I had on hand. I matted again with a fairly wide brown mat as I needed to make this image look large enough for a 5 1/2 inch square card! The tone on tone brown strip is an unknown DP from my bits box. While rummaging in there, I found this piece of hessian (burlap). It is actually a piece that has the little hole from the top of the hessian pack, but I hid that wee hole in my card design.

The background DP is from a kit I have had for 5 or maybe even 10 years! Now that is a VOS item!
I fussy cut some clocks and compasses from another snippet of DP... a snippet of 12x12 DP  left over from a scrapbook layout. I added them around the image and pop dotted the larger compass.

I am going to use this card as a notecard so have left the inside black. I will use it to write a letter to a friend.
